Tangless Thread Inserts Without Tangs
Wire thread inserts with no break-off tang — install in either direction, remove and reuse cleanly, and eliminate broken-tang FOD risk at the source. Free-running and screw-locking types for FOD-controlled aerospace assembly.
A tangless insert is a helically coiled thread insert with no installation tang. Instead of driving on a break-off tang, its shaped leading coil keys onto the installation tool; when the tool reverses, the insert stays set. There is no tang to break off, nothing to fish out of the hole, and zero broken-tang foreign object debris (FOD) — which is why FOD-critical aerospace programs specify tangless.
What Is a Tangless Insert?
Tangless inserts deliver exactly the same thread geometry, strength and load distribution as classic wire thread inserts — the diamond-section coil, the STI tapped hole, the standard internal thread. The difference is entirely in the drive system: the coil’s end is formed into a keyed shape that the installation tool grips positively, in either rotational direction.
Insert Without Tangs: Definition and Generic Category
“Tangless” is the generic industry category; brand names for tangless coils exist but the function is standard. Ankolam manufactures tangless inserts to the same DIN 8140 / NASM21209 / GB/T 24425 thread families as its tanged coils, so they drop into the same tapped holes with the same tooling line — one plant, both drive systems.
Where Tangless Inserts Are Required
- Aerospace assembly lines with FOD control programs — no tang break-off step means no tang fragments to account for
- Blind holes and closed cavities where a broken tang cannot be retrieved
- Repair and maintenance operations where inserts must be removed and reinstalled without damage
- High-volume assembly where eliminating the tang-break step measurably cuts installation labor
How a Tangless Insert Locks Without a Tang
Keying Without a Tang Break-Off Step
In a tanged insert, the tang is a working feature: the mandrel pushes on it, then it is broken off and removed. In a tangless insert, the leading coil is formed into a keyed notch. The installation tool engages this notch from above, winds the insert down, and then unscrews itself out — the insert’s coil diameter bites into the STI thread and holds position. Nothing is broken, nothing is discarded, nothing can fall into the assembly.
Same Thread Lock Options as Tanged Coils
Tangless does not change the locking options: choose free-running tangless coils for pure strengthening, or screw-locking tangless coils with polygon locking coils that grip the bolt against vibration. Both install and remove with the same tangless tooling.
Tangless vs Tanged: the Practical Differences

| Post-installation step | None | Break off tang, verify removal |
| FOD risk | None by design | Tang fragments possible in blind holes |
| Removal | Clean extraction, insert reusable | Destruction-free extraction possible but tang-less tooling simpler |
| Assembly time | Fastest — measured 35% faster in airframe case below | Standard |
| Cost position | Slightly higher unit price, lower installed cost | Lowest unit price |
| Thread standards | Same STI holes, same DIN 8140 / NASM21209 / GB/T 24425 families | |
Product Range: Free-Running and Screw-Locking Tangless Types
| Attribute | Specification |

Why FOD-Critical Programs Specify Tangless
Foreign Object Debris Risk Removed at the Source
In airframe assembly, a single loose tang inside a wing box or cabin structure is a programmable defect: it can migrate, bridge circuits and jam mechanisms, and finding it costs hours of inspection. FOD prevention programs therefore attack the source, not the symptom — replacing break-off tangs with tangless drive systems removes the failure mode entirely. The effect compounds on every hole: no tang-break tooling, no fragment retrieval, no inspection sign-off for debris, and a documented 35% faster assembly rate in the airframe case below.
Tangless Inserts in Aluminum Wing Box & Door Mounts
A commercial aircraft program was battling stripped threads in low-strength aluminum wing-box and door-mount bosses — with repeat disassembly for maintenance wearing parent threads, and tanged inserts leaving break-off debris in FOD-controlled zones. Ankolam supplied 304 stainless tangless inserts with dry-film lubricant: bidirectional installation with no tang step, even load distribution across the coil, and full-process traceability. The outcome: thread loading capacity up 3–4×, assembly efficiency up 35%, and 10,000+ vibration-fatigue cycles with zero thread loosening or stripping — meeting civil-aviation airworthiness verification requirements. Now fitted in volume across airframe load-path attachment points.
Manufacturing and Supply
Production and Inspection Capability
Tangless coils are produced on the same dedicated coil-winding lines as our wire insert program — wire drawing from round to diamond section, precision winding, and final 100% dimensional inspection before release. Material heat numbers and batch records are retained for every lot, supporting your traceability audits.
MOQ, Lead Time and Export Experience
Semi-finished stock on common tangless sizes shortens standard delivery by roughly half; custom sizes, materials and coatings are quoted per project with engineering support. Our team replies within one business day and ships worldwide from Wuxi, with export documentation handled in-house.
Tangless Insert FAQ
How does a tangless insert stay in place without a tang?
The tang never held the insert in service — after installation the coil’s own radial tension grips the tapped STI thread. The tang was only an installation handle. Tangless inserts replace it with a keyed leading coil that the tool engages from above, so nothing needs to break off, and the coil grips the parent thread identically.
Are tangless inserts as strong as tanged coils?
Yes. Thread strength lives in the diamond-section coil and its engagement with the STI thread — identical in both systems. The airframe case above recorded 3–4× thread loading and 10,000+ vibration cycles with tangless coils.
Can tangless inserts be removed and reused?
Tangless coils extract cleanly with a tangless removal tool — the insert winds out undamaged and can be reinstalled, which makes them ideal for prototype builds and rework-heavy maintenance lines.
What tooling do I need to switch from tanged to tangless?
Only the mandrel and extraction tool change; tapped STI holes, gauges and taps are identical. See installation tools for the tangless tool line.
