How a Kit-Based Repair Is Performed
Drill, Tap, Install and Break the Tang
- Drill the damaged thread out to the kit’s drill diameter (chamfer the mouth)
- Tap with the kit STI tap — the tap’s thread is the insert’s mounting thread
- Install the insert with the mandrel, seat 0.2 mm below the surface
- Break the tang with the tang tool and recover the fragment (tanged type); tangless-type kits skip this step entirely
