Thread Insert Installation Tools and Taps

The complete tooling line that matches our inserts: STI taps, installation mandrels, tang breakers, gauges, extractors and automatic machines — one factory, one tolerance chain, zero cross-brand mismatch.

Thread insert installation tools are the taps, drivers, mandrels, tang tools and gauges that turn an insert into a working thread. Ankolam supplies the full line matched to its own inserts — from M1.6 hand tools to automatic machines with process monitoring — so the hole you tap, the insert you wind and the gauge you verify all share one engineering source.

Why Matched Tooling Matters

The Tolerance Chain

An insert system is a chain: drill → tap → insert → gauge. Each link has a tolerance; when tools and inserts come from different factories, tolerances stack adversarially — a tap at the loose limit plus an insert at the tight limit yields a thread that gauges fine but strips early. Ankolam tools are ground for Ankolam inserts; the chain is engineered, not assembled.

Coating-Friendly Taps

Coated inserts (dry-film, silver) lose their coating to abrasive installation. Our STI taps are profiled to reduce forming marks and coating wear during installation — fewer rejects on coated parts, and taps can be supplied in special dimensions for integrated tooling.

Installation Fundamentals

The Three-Step Standard (Hand Tools)

  1. Drill to the recommended diameter with a chamfer; load the insert into the tool with the cutting slot (or keyway) down; keep the tool tip inside the hole mouth
  2. Drive vertically — check squareness in the first 1–2 pitches; if it runs crooked, back out and restart; never reverse mid-installation
  3. Seat to depth — insert top 0.2 mm below the surface; hold the insert with the hex tool and reverse the tool out

The 0.2 mm sub-seat keeps the thread clear of the sealing face and the “no reversal” rule prevents crossed coils — the two habits that prevent most installation failures.

Gauges and Verification

Plug gauges check the tapped STI thread before installation (GO end enters, NO-GO end — red ring — must not). Ring gauges check the installed insert’s finished thread. Together they close the loop: tap verified, insert verified, bolt torque repeatable. Gauges are lapped for long calibration life.

Automation Path

Automatic Installation with Process Monitoring

Automatic tools add depth-accurate installation and optional process monitoring: missed inserts, wrong depth and cross-threading are intercepted in-cycle instead of at final assembly — the poka-yoke line between manual work and machine-fed production. Line integration support is available through the engineering contact.

Installation Tool FAQ

Which tool do I need for M6 inserts?

M6 falls in the M4–M14 band of the simple hand tools; order the M6 mandrel for tanged or tangless coils plus the M6 STI tap. The RFQ form assembles the exact list from your insert sizes.

Can your tools install other brands’ inserts?

For inserts of the same standard (DIN 8140 / NASM21209) yes — geometry is standardized. Tolerance matching, however, is guaranteed only within the Ankolam chain.

Forming or cutting STI tap — which one?

Forming taps produce no chips and stronger threads in ductile materials; cutting taps suit harder alloys and most general repair. Tell us the parent material and we recommend per application.

Do you supply tangless installation tooling?

Yes — tangless mandrels and extractors across the size range; see tangless inserts for the insert line.
